Police: Hunter says he thought it was still duck season

Barrington police responded to the Osamequin Bird Sanctuary at about 9:40 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, after a resident called to complain about duck hunters on Hundred Acre Cove.

The resident told police she believed duck hunting season was over. Police spoke with the hunters who said they thought Feb. 1 was the last day of duck hunting season.

Police called for assistance from the RI Department of Environmental Management. DEM told police that Feb. 1 was the first day of Canada duck hunting season and that duck hunting season had ended a week earlier.

DEM then cited one of the two hunters for the violation, as the hunters had shot and killed one duck and had it in their boat.
