Manuel J. Goulart, 77, formerly of Bristol

Manuel J. Goulart, 77, passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, in Orange Park, Fla. He was born on Jan. 18, 1940 in Madalena, Pico, Azores, Portugal to Alberto and Maria Angela Goulart.

Of the Catholic faith, he was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Church in Bristol prior to moving to Orange Park recently. He worked as an electrical tester in the power cable industry and retired from The Okonite Company. His memberships and involvements include the Filarmonica União e Progresso Madalense, Bristol Sports, Portuguese Continental Union, Project Bay, Banda Filarmonica Santa Isabel, and Confraternizacao De Picoenses. Above all, he was a loving and devoted husband, father, and vavô. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Goulart was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Carlos Alberto Goulart, and his sister-in-law, Maria De Lurdes Goulart. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Fernanda Cabral Goulart; two children, Elizabeth Almeida (Eduardo) and Rui Goulart (Carmilda); two grandchildren, Chelsea Almeida and Brittany Rodrigues; and a great-granddaughter, Isabel Almeida.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday, May 15 at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, Fla. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m., officiated by Fr. Jaisemon Xaviour. Interment will immediately follow in Jacksonville Memory Gardens Cemetery.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
