Maria de Lurdes Moniz, 84, Bristol

Maria de Lurdes (Peixoto) Moniz, 94, passed away on June 13, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Manor. She was the wife of the late Hermano Rego Moniz.  

Born in Conceicao, Ribeira Grande, St. Michael, she was the daughter of the late Jose Teodoro and Maria da Gloria (Rodrigues) Peixoto.

She is survived by her children, Odette Grillo, Fatima Amaral, Ana Paula Elias and her husband Francisco, and Nelia Alves and her husband Eduardo. She was the grandmother of Ricardo Silva, Gisella Martins, Sonia daSilva, Theresa Amaral, Nelson Amaral, Christopher Amaral, Patricia Amaral, Marlene Elias, Ademar Elias, Jennifer Labao, Kenneth Alves, Daisy Alves, Angela Bento and Michael Moniz; and great grandmother of Jason Martins, Jennifer Martins, Taylor Hamilton, Tate Silva, Gavin Silva, Kayla Ribeiro, Isabella Labao, Kristina Labao, Noah Labao, Gabriella Alves, Joshua Alves, Alexander Alves, Kali Crosby, Domonic Pacheco, Ricardo Bento and Donny Bento. She was the mother of the late Duarte Peixoto Moniz and Gisella Peixoto Moniz, and sister of the late Jose Peixoto, Aristedes Peixoto, Evaristo Peixoto, Ambrosina Elias and Maria DeDeus.

Mrs. Moniz worked for I. Shalom and R & J Jewelry before retiring.

Her funeral services will be held Friday, June16, 8 a.m., from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bristol. Calling hours are Thursday, 5-7 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
