Maria Sofia (Bolarinho) Araujo, 78, of Wood Street, passed away on April 5, 2017 at home. She was the wife of the late Jose do Esperito Santo Araujo.  

Born in Villa Franca do Campo, St. Michael, she was the daughter of the late Jaime and Maria do Nascimento (Peixoto) Bolarinho. She was the mother of Duarte Araujo, Elmira Pinheiro (Eduardo), Cidalia Estrada (Luis), Jose Araujo, Vanda Ferreira (Gus), Rui Araujo (Suzette), Luis Araujo and Emanuel Araujo; grandmother of Duarte Araujo Jr, Jay Bento, Kelly Pinheiro, Eddie Pinheiro, Robert Pinheiro, Randy Estrada, Sofia Estrada, Joey Araujo, Natasha McGee, Jordan Araujo, Kaitlyn Ferreira, Sienna Ferreira, Alex Araujo, Dylan Araujo, Colin Schauble, Zachary Araujo, Liam Araujo and Preston Araujo; great grandmother of Alana Faria, Isabella Pinheiro, Olivia Pinheiro, Savannah Cruz and Guiliana Cruz. She was the sister of Liberta Pinheiro.

Her funeral services were held April 10, from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Luis Garcia Dutra at St. Elizabeth’s Church. The liturgical readings were by Sofia Estrada and Gus Ferreira. The Prayer of the Burial was read by Suzette Araujo and the offertory gifts were presented by Kaitlyn Ferreira, Kelly Pinheiro and Sofia Estrada. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Randy Estrada, Alex Araujo, Preston Araujo, Bobby Pinheiro, Zach Araujo, Duarte Araujo, Eddie Pinheiro and Dylan Araujo.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
