Marjorie Sharples Humphrey, 87, of Tiverton, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2018. She was the wife of Irving D. “Peter” Humphrey III, to whom she was married for 63 years.
A daughter of the late George B. and Olga E. (Thelen) Sharples, she was born and raised in Fall River, Mass. She was a 1949 graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School and a 1953 graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.
After college, she moved to New York City and worked as an underwriter for New York Life Insurance Company before moving to Tiverton in 1954. After raising her children, she worked for Horner Millwork in Somerset, Mass., for over 20 years before her retirement.
During her youth, Marjorie was a choir member of the Church of the Ascension, now Church of the Holy Spirit, in Fall River. Upon moving to Tiverton, she became a communicant of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild.
An avid tennis player, she was a member of the Acoaxet Club, Warren’s Point Beach Club, and Elephant Rock Beach Club. She was also a longtime member of the Newport Ski Club, Tiverton Garden Club, Tiverton Yacht Club, and Fall River Historical Society. For 37 years, she was a library Trustee for the Essex Public Library and she was a past Chairman of the Tiverton Library Foundation.
In addition to her husband, Irving, she is survived by their four children, a daughter, Ann H. Taylor, and her husband Dr. Dean Taylor of Durham, N.C.; three sons, Peter D. Humphrey and his wife Barbara of Tiverton, Attorney Richard S. Humphrey and his wife Kristen of Little Compton, and Attorney Robert H. Humphrey and his wife Michelle-Lee of Little Compton; a sister, Barbara S. Sturtevant and her husband Windsor of Oregon; and nine grandchildren, Jacob, Luke, Emma, Michael, John, Celeste and Jack Humphrey and Katherine and Benjamin Taylor.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 1956 Main Road, Tiverton, RI 02878. Visiting hours will be Friday, May 4, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River.
