EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence High School instructor Richard Martin was named as the school district’s Teacher of the Year for 2017. Mr. Martin, who has worked in the department for 31 years, was presented the award at the June 13 School Committee meeting.

Superintendent Kathryn Crowley, who was absent from Tuesday’s proceedings, called the selection of Mr. Martin by his peers and administrators a “great choice.”

Mr. Martin is a member of the EPHS History/Social Studies Department, but is also recognized as one of the most active and engaging instructors to students throughout the building.

“Richard Martin is a tremendous teacher and is more than deserving of this honor,” said Mr. Martin’s department chairman Michael Silva. “He is dedicated wholeheartedly to his profession. He has built an AP (Advanced Placement) government course and African American EEP (Early Enrollment Program) course from the ground up, providing his high school students with the opportunity to earn college credits. He is a mentor and resource for many teachers in the building as well.”

A feature on Mr. Martin will appear in the June 22 free print edition of The Post.
