SOUTH KINGSTOWN — The Martin Middle School entry captured the 2016 boys' state title at the championship meet held Saturday, May 21, at South Kingstown's Curtis Corner Middle School facility.
The Wildcats overall depth proved the difference as the locals tallied 72.5 points and several top six finishes. Western Hills of Cranston was second with 44 and Lincoln was third with 42.
Prince Peixoto was the lone individual state champ for Martin, running a time of 4 minutes, 41.87 seconds to claim the boys' 1,500 meter race. Also for the Wildcats, their 4x100 relay team of Cameron Bailey, Dwayne Richards, Dante DosSantos and William Ferro won the state title in 49.83 seconds. Of note as well locally, Max DiMuccio of St. Margaret School in city won the boys' 3,000 in 9:36.87.
The Martin team roster included: Kaleb Almeida, Cameron Bialey, Yanis Benadovda, George Benziger, Biron Chalas, Fabio DaGraca, Troy DeAndrade, Dante DosSantos, Kianu Duarte, Arron Dumapias, William Ferro, Michael Foster, Allen Johnson, Nathan Lathrobe, Khallid Mack, Cameron Monteiro, Corey Monteiro, Santi Nocella, Jeremy Perdomo, Prince Peixoto, Dwayne Richards, Alex Rodriguez, Parker Rush, Emanuel Santiago, Brett Schwab, Luis Vargas, Cameron Vaz, Rafael Ximenes. Michael Almeida is the head coach.
The Martin girls' 4x1 relay quartet of Mekiah Denson, Abbygael Adewusi, Alyssa DeOliveira and Jazmya Harris captured the state title in a time of 54.27 seconds. The Wildcats scored 18 points to place 11th in the team standings. Davisville (North Kingstown) won the girls' team championship with 58 points. Another local note from the girls' meet, the Gordon School's Maddie Lee won the 100 meter hurdles in 14.26.
And finally, the Riverside Middle School teams scored four and two points, respectively, in the girls' and boys' meets as Christy Long placed fourth in the girls' 1,500 (5:28.24) and Armani Ortega placed fifth in the boys' turbo javelin (127'02").
