Mary W. Smith, 81, of Barrington

Mary W. (Wells) Smith, 81, of Sixth Street, died peacefully on Monday, July 9, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Thomas Allen Smith. 

Born in Jackson, Mich., a daughter of the late Irving and Margaret (Will) Wells-Leedy, she lived in Barrington for the past three years previously residing in Wellesley, Mass. 

Mrs. Smith was an occupational therapist for the Boston Public School Department for 10 years. 

Mary was a graduate of Eastern Michigan University earning a Bachelor of Science degree. She enjoyed working with and helping deaf children. 

Mrs. Smith was a member of the St. John Church in Wellesley, Mass. She was a member of the A.O.T.A. and was an Autism Specialist. 

Mary enjoyed spending time with her loving grandchildren. 

Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Mark T. Smith of South Dartmouth, Mass., David T. Smith of Barrington, Thomas A. Smith Jr. of Naperville, Ill., Jennifer Smith Gildea of Barrington and Patrick N. Smith of Montauk, NY; two sisters, Karen Yahr of Milan, Mich., and Anne Burel of Whitehall, Mich.; a brother, Ron Wells of Grandville, Mich., and twenty one grandchildren. 

Her funeral service will be held in Whitehall, Mich. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Montague, Mich. Arrangements are by the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home. For online condolences please visit wrwatsonfuneralhome.com

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
