McCarthy: In a good economy, we need to prepare students for careers

Posted

My fellow Bristolians, a Greek Philosopher once stated, “ … that change is the only constant …” It was true then, and is true now.

Not seen in generations, our nation’s economy and labor market are now operating at what is known as, “Full Employment.” What that means is for every single person who wants a job, a job opening is available. Locally, a large defense contractor, involved in the manufacturer of fast attack submarines, is desperate for employees. What does that mean for young people, here in Bristol?

Simply put, a gap exists between the needs of employers, like the one mentioned, and a skilled labor pool. Our high school students, not interested in further college education, need to know they can acquire the traditional vocational skills, no longer offered in public schools. I will promote that our students take advantage of Apprenticeship, Internship and Trade-Training Opportunities.

This is a positive change!

Patrick “Pat” McCarthy

Mr. McCarthy is a Republican candidate for Bristol Town Council.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
