MIDDLETOWN — A woman charged with domestic murder in Middletown Tuesday had a previous run-in with Portsmouth police last year.

Middletown police responded at about 7 a.m. Tuesday to the apartment at 50 Jean St., where they met 33-year-old Melissa Sue Anne Castle. According to police, Ms. Castle said she and her domestic partner, Rachael S. Kilroy, 34, had been arguing when things turned violent.

Ms. Kilroy's body was found upstairs and the Medical Examiner’s Office pronounced her dead on the scene. Although the exact cause of death has not yet been determined, Middletown police said it appeared Ms. Kilroy had been strangled.

Ms. Castle was scheduled to have been arraigned on a charge of domestic murder Tuesday afternoon.

Although Middletown police said Ms. Castle had no permanent address, she provided a Silva Avenue, Portsmouth address in November 2014 when police in that town charged her with driving a vehicle without the consent of its owner, a felony.

The arrest stemmed from an incident on Nov. 11, when police received a report from a woman who said her 1994 Chrysler New Yorker was missing, along with a flat-screen TV, Dell laptop computer and $80 and cash. Portsmouth police picked up Ms. Castle at the Middletown Police Department after a warrant had been issued for her arrest.

Ms. Castle has a long rap sheet dating back over 10 years, including charges of assault, second-degree robbery, making crank or obscene phone calls, disorderly conduct, felony larceny, writing fraudulent checks, obstructing police, resisting arrest and violating a no-contact order.
