Two East Providence High School winter sports teams offered up terrific results competing in early season events last weekend.

Two EPHS wrestlers won their respective weight classes while leading the Townies to a third-place team finish as the locals made their annual trek to Waterford, Conn., for the Lancer Invitational Saturday, Dec. 17, at Waterford High School.

Killingly, Conn., edged Southington, Conn., for the team title with 189 points to 177 in the 15-team competition. East Providence earned 162 followed by two more Nutmeg State schools Staples in fourth with 147 and Windham in fifth with 130.

Individually, E.P.’s Martim Moniz defended his Lancer Invitational title at 120 pounds, defeating Southington’s Jake Rivera in the championship match. The Townies’s Robbie Amaral captured the 182-pound class winning  his title bout with neighboring Barrington’s Tyler Herrera.

Two more Townies lost their championship outings to finish as runners-up in their weights. Charlie Phillips dropped a 6-2 decision at 138 pounds to Southington’s Colton Thorpe while Jacob Poore lost  to Killingly’s Jack Richardson at 160.

In addition, East Providence’s Jacob Francis wrestled back to place third at 170, winning his match consolation round match. And Simon Palumbo dropped his third-place bout at 145.

Also Saturday, the EPHS indoor track and field squads took part in the annual Rhode Island Track Coaches Association Invitational at the PCTA with sophomore Nazarae Phillip making an immediate impression by winning the 55 meter dash.

Phillip defeated West Warwick rival, fellow sophomore and reigning freshman dash state champ Xenia Raye by running a 7.47 to the latter’s 7.49. Smithfield senior Lauren Boyd was third with a 7.54. Phillip ran third to Raye (7.81-7.65) at last winter’s frosh states.

Phillip also finished just out of the places in the 300, running seventh in 45.53. South Kingstown junior Sierra Thompson won the event in 42.43. Portsmouth senior Elly Skeels was sixth at 45.26.

EPHS senior Gladys Barrera also fell just out of the placing spots in the 600, running a 1:51.85. Barrington sophomore Caroline Reznik won the event in 1:45.26. Cumberland senior Emma Peterson was sixth in 1:51.34.

Of note as well from the girls’ competition, Bay View senior Amy Papa was third in the 55 meter hurdles with a 9.85. South Kingstown’s Sierra Thompson won in 9.08 with North Smithfield’s Bethany Marsella second in 9.26.

Bengals’ senior Francine Milller added a sixth in the 1,500 with her 5:15.12. Emmy Belvin of Mount St. Charles won the event in 5:09.22.

On the boys’ side, Slavick placed fourth on attempts at 6 feet even in the high jump. North Smithfield’s Nick Lamoureux and Ethan McCann-Carter of St. Raphael placed second and third, respective, clearing the same height. None of the three could match the 6-2 cleared by LaSalle’s Brady Fisher to win the event.
