EAST PROVIDENCE — Kevin Silva, playing out of Montaup Country Club in Portsmouth, captured the Rhode Island Golf Association State Amateur championship Friday, July 17, at Metacomet C.C. in city with a 6 and 5 victory over John Jackopsic, of Meadow Brook Golf Club in Richmond.
Silva closed out the match with a par 4 on 13th hole, their 31st of the day. His lead reached six with a birdie on the par 4 11th a few minutes earlier. Silva then went dormie as both made par on the long three-shot 12th.
Silva raced to a 3-up lead to open the 36-hole championship match, winning the first three holes of the morning 18 including the first two with birdies. His lead reached as large as 4-up as he made a par 3 on the long 200-plus yard 10th.
Jackopsic, however, sliced his deficit to just 1-up by the 16th with his own birdie, but Silva regained control and his three-hole edge with birdies on each of the par four 17th and 18th.
By the conclusion of the outward nine in the afternoon, the 27th of the match, Silva's lead grew to 5-up as he made a par on the five-shot ninth, a hole he eagled in the morning session, while Jackopsic made a bogey.
