PROVIDENCE — The Mt. Hope football team lost to Moses Brown, 55-35, in a Division II playoff quarterfinal game on Saturday afternoon. Quarterback Matt DeFelice completed 15 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns, led the Huskies on two scoring drives to give Mt. Hope leads of 7-0 and 14-7 in the first half. DeFelice connected with his favorite target, Max Moskala on a 35-yard catch and run in the first quarter to give Mt. Hope a 7-0 lead, with a Zach DaCosta extra point.

“Matt had his best game of the season. He did a really good job of leading and managing the offense,” said head coach Thomas Del Santo Jr.

Junior running back Dylan Martins scored on a one yard run, capping a long Huskies drive that started on their own 8 yard line. Martins ran for 30 yards on 10 carries during the drive and ran for 147 yards on 30 carries for the game. A Zach DaCosta kick gave the Huskies a 14-7 lead.

“Dylan’s been a key player for us. He stepped in to replace starter Josh Pompey who broke his leg early in the season,” said the coach, adding, our offensive line (consisting of Caden Cabral, Connor McKenna, Mike Trexler, Keith Stephenson, and Aaron Meyers) has really been a strength for our team. Meyers is pound for pound one of the best lineman in the state,” he said.

Moses Brown came back and tied the game at 14-14 and never looked back. Quakers’ quarterback Mike Walsh was a force, connecting on 16 of 22 passes for 431 yards and four touchdowns.

The Huskies offense did their best to keep up, scoring three more times in the second half.

DeFelice connected again with Moskala on a 32-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

“Max had a great day,” said coach Del Santo. The two way player rushed for 45 yards on 8 carries, caught 3 passes for 80 yards and two scores and had four tackles on defense.

Running back DeAnte Calhoun scored for the Huskies on a 14-yard run and DeFelice connected with Zachary Burke for an 18-yard touchdown. DeFelice threw a pass to Moskala for a two point conversion to give the Huskies 35 points.

“In spite of the loss, the team played a great game, their best of the season by far. The team really started playing well back at Chariho. Each week we got better and better. We had incredible stats against Moses Brown. We had over 400 yards of total offense and 18 first downs. We knew going in, that we would be able to score against them. But we also knew we had to keep them from scoring. They have a really good offense and they executed really well,” said coach Del Santo.

Senior Caden Cabral played center for the offense and led the defense at middle linebacker accounting for 14 tackles. 80 in his last four games.

“Caden played an incredible game,” said the coach. “Even though we lost the game, there were a lot of positives and we are very encouraged and excited for Thanksgiving.”
