Mt. Hope Huskies lose to Central, 22-7

The Mt. Hope High School football team lost to Central, 22-7, at Thomas Vendituoli Field on Friday night. The Huskies fall to 2-3 in Division II-A, while Central moves up to 4-0.

With 5 minutes left in the game and Central holding on to a 14-7 lead, Huskies quarterback Vincent Berretto, playing in just his second game of the season in the place of injured Sam Hollands, and the Mt. Hope offense were driving down the field. Central had stymied the Mt. Hope running game and Berretto was throwing on almost every down.

On third and nine at the Central 31 yard-line, Berretto made one of his best throws of the game to senior wide receiver Nathan Medina, who leaped up near the Mt. Hope sideline for an unbelievable catch, coming down with both feet in bounds, to give the Huskies a first down at the Knights' 20 yard-line.

After a Mt. Hope timeout, Berretto had an errant throw intercepted, and the Knights took over with less than two minutes left in the game. The junior quarterback came off the field distraught. Head coach T.J. DelSanto came over and put his arm around his quarterback and consoled him.

In the first half the Mt. Hope defense kept their team in the game while the offense had trouble moving the ball. With the Knights

driving in the second quarter, Knights quarterback Christian Leteo lofted a bomb toward the right corner of the end zone, defensive back Tezhan Calhoun-Massey out jumped the pack and made the interception. Once on the ground, he zipped up the Central side line 60 yards and looked as if he was going to outrun the pack before he was brought down on the Knights' 40 yard-line.

The offense took over from there and scored on a Berretto 25-yard pass to Jayson Pompey over the middle. The touchdown and a Josh Canario kick gave the Huskies a, 7-0, lead. On the ensuing kick-off, Knights kick returner Dametrius O'Connor took it to the house on an 80-yard kick return. Making the score, 7-6.

In the third quarter, Central running back Tyrone Silva scored on a 22-yard run. The Knights went for two and scored on a pass play from Leteo to Pajebo Myers.

The Knights scored again in the fourth quarter after the Berretto interception on a 40-yard run by Deondre Jackson. They went for two and scored on a Leon Barbosa run.
