Mt. Hope Huskies off to 2-0 start

It was a busy holiday week for the Mt. Hope Huskies gymnastics team, which shined in recent competition.

In the Rhode Island Gymnastics Injury Fund meet held Tuesday, Dec. 29 in Newport, the Division II Lady Huskies posted the highest team score with a 135.25. That was enough to outscore D-I LaSalle (132) and North Kingstown (133). Mt. Hope also defeated Exeter West Greenwich, which scored 125.15 as a team.

Huskies senior Victoria Gendreau topped all gymnasts with an all around score of 35.85. She won the vault with a score of 9.2 and the floor with a score of 9.3. She scored an 8.8 on bars and an 8.55 on beam.

Freshman Meghan Oliver and Kaitlin Quinn both posted an all around score of 32.6, while Oliver scored a 9.1 on vault, an 8.25 on bars, a 6.25 on beam and a 9.0 on floor. Quinn had an 8.5 on vault, a 7.55 on bars, an 8.1 on beam and an 8.45 on floor.

Jayme Foreman, also a freshman, had an all around score of 32.15, with an 8.5 on vault, 7.3 on bars, 8.55 on beam and 7.8 on the floor. Senior Jordan Masaitis had an all around score of 31.45, with 8.35 on vault, 8.0 on bars, 6.75 on beam and 8.35 on the floor.

Four days later, on Sunday, Jan. 3, the Huskies scored a 134.25 to beat Exeter West Greenwich, 127.95, and West Warwick, 111.95, at the Newport YMCA.

Once again, senior Victoria Gendreau dominated with an overall score of 34.1. She scored 8.95 on vault, 8.75 on bars, 7.2 on beam and 9.2 on the floor. Freshman Meghan Oliver had an overall score of 33.75, with 9.05 on vault, 8.15 on the bars, 7.6 on the beam and 9.0 on the floor. Jayme Foreman had an all-around score of 32.75, with 8.2 on the vault, 7.7 on the bars, 8.4 on the beam and 8.45 on the floor. Kaitlin Quinn posted an overall score of 32.1, with 8.55 on vault, 6.8 on bars, 8.15 on beam and 8.6 on the floor. Senior Jordan Masaitis had an all-around score of 31.0, with a 7.8 on vault, 7.65 on bars, 7.85 on beam and 7.7 on the floor. Sophomore Brianna Gendreau posted an all-around score of 26.9 with an 8.15 on the vault.

Next up, The 2-0 Huskies go head to head with rival Portsmouth (3-0) at the Newport YMCA at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12.
