The Huskies complete the sweep Wednesday, beating Rogers 6-3

The Mt. Hope Huskies finished a perfect season Wednesday, capturing the District 3 championship.

The Huskies beat Rogers High School 6-3 at Rhode Island College Wednesday evening to complete the championship round sweep after dominating Rogers 11-0 Tuesday.

Senior Maddy Reis again led the Huskies from the pitching circle, surrendering just 3 runs over 7 innings, after having pitched a five-inning shutout the day before. Reis struck out 5 in the complete-game effort, the biggest of which ended the game with the potential tying run at the plate.

Reis’ leadership on the field is nothing new, something she has been achieving throughout her high school career.

“Every single practice, she just led,” said Don Silva, who was the Huskies head coach through last season. “She never gets down. She’s always encouraging. She is just a natural leader.”

Rogers attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh Wednesday when catcher Michaela Matthews laced a one-out triple to left and scored on an infield single with two outs. A Huskies error put two runners on before Reis shut the door to secure the win.

Carissa Rego sparked the Huskies offense, going 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored. With Rogers pitching around slugger Reis (who drove in 6 runs in game 1), the Huskies spread out the offense, pushing a single run across in the first, third and fourth, but Rogers kept it close with two in the bottom of the third.

Mt. Hope took advantage of some Rogers miscues in the sixth inning, capitalizing with Rego’s RBI double, followed by a run-scoring triple from Sam Eddy. The Huskies added an insurance run on Gigi Greenslade's infield single in the seventh.

Sharing the load the way the team did Wednesday has been the key to two consecutive perfect seasons, even with a high school star of Reis’ stature on the team, Head Coach Nicole Clemens said.

“Obviously, Maddie has been huge for us, especially in the circle,” Clemens said. “But we’ve been good one through nine. That’s the key … we hit top to bottom. It’s a team effort. No one person can do it alone.”
