Nancy Lynne Pontes, 76, Little Compton and Barrington

Nancy Lynne Pontes, 76, of Barrington, and formerly of Little Compton, died on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at Tockwotton on the Waterfront in East Providence. Nancy was born June 11, 1941, in Fall River, the daughter of the late Manuel and Marjorie (Chase) Cavaca.

Nancy graduated from the Newport Hospital School of Nursing in 1962. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Salve Regina University and her master’s degree in nursing from URI, specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Mrs. Pontes was certified in geriatrics with a specialty in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

For over 25 years, Nancy was a devoted advocate for her patients and their families. She implemented and lectured around the country on the importance of Memory Assessment and Pet Therapy Programs for the elderly. After retiring, Nancy spent time with her family and worked endless hours tending to her beautiful flower gardens as well as continuing her life long love of animals, especially dogs.

She is survived by a son Thomas J. Pontes and his wife Jane of Bellingham, Mass., and a daughter, Melissa J. Surprenant and her husband John of Dudley, Mass.; four grandchildren, Kathryn, Matthew, and Elizabeth Pontes of Bellingham, Mass., and Peyton Surprenant of Dudley, Mass., whom she loved dearly. She is survived by her sisters Sally Arruda of Little Compton and Mary Lou Souza of Tiverton.

She was predeceased by her sisters Ada (Jeanette) Arruda, Constance Arruda, and Dorothy Vibberts.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 17, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. with a prayer service at 1 in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.

A private burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Tiverton on June 9, 2018.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
