PORTSMOUTH — The Newport Navy Choristers didn’t just sing yuletide favorites during their annual “Christmas in Song” concert held Friday night at St. Barnabas Church.

They also helped to raise money for the nonprofit Kate Grana Music and Arts Association (KGMAA), which is leading an effort for major renovations to the Portsmouth High School auditorium.

Besides the Navy Choristers, groups of student choruses from Melville and Hathaway elementary schools also performed songs before a capacity audience.

According to Margie Brennan of KGMAA, the concert raised $12,000 between ticket sales, advertisements and individual benefactors.

KGMAA is working toward creating a state-of-the-art hub for music and dramatic arts in the 50-plus-year-old PHS auditorium.

According to Ms. Brennan, a new lighting and sound system should be installed in the spring of 2019. The second phase of the project will focus on air conditioning and the stage.

Another fund-raiser, “Broadway: From Then Til Now,” a musical revenue to be offered by the Dr. Robert A. Davidson Charitable Fund, is scheduled for Feb. 9, 2019. All proceeds will be donated to KGMAA, Ms. Brennan said.
