New Main Street bar gets conditional approval in Warren

Posted

Main Street will have another spot to grab a light bite and drinks soon, following a tentative approval from the Warren Town Council last week.
The new establishment, The Serpent And Its Tail, will be located at 504 Main St. and was brought forth by Michael Sears.

“I’ve opened 10 places in Providence in the last 20 years,” Sears told the Council. “I’ve been looking to branch out to different parts of the state.” One of those places you might have heard of has been operating for about four years on South Main Street in Providence; The Walnut Room.

Sears described his vision for the space as a place where people can grab a drink and an appetizer before going out to other restaurants or places of interest in the area, or a place to wind up after a long day of work for restaurant workers in the area.

Although the Council unanimously agreed to grant Sears a business license once he receives some final approval from local authorities, Councilwoman Keri Cronin made a point about the number of drinking establishments in town.

“I am at the point sitting here where we’ve reached or almost exceeded the max capacity for drinking establishments in the town and it concerns me that we are becoming a watering hole almost exclusively,” she said. “It’s really important to me that any new business of this nature brings something that’s really unique and really well identified and well planned and seems like there’s a focus and something really special that you’d be bringing to our Main Street.”

Councilman Brandt Heckert vouched for Sears’ ability as a businessman, having experience with some of his prior establishments in Providence, but said that he agreed with Cronin’s concerns.

“I think competition drives the economy, so I have no problem with it,” countered Councilman Joe DePasquale. “If people like what you’re doing, they’ll go there. If they don’t, you’ll be out of business. Good luck.”
