Residents hunker down as blizzard rages on mid-day

EAST PROVIDENCE — It appears most residents heeded the suggestion of public safety officials to stay off the roads and hunker down at home, as city authorities report no significant accidents or incidents through mid-day Thursday, Jan. 4, related to the blizzard striking the region.

East Providence Fire Chief Oscar Elmasian said he put a fourth rescue into service, instead of the usual three, in preparation for the snowstorm. He also added an additional firefighter to each ladder truck and has two others on duty specifically to assist in any plowing needs of the department.

East Providence Police Lieutenant Raymond Blinn said besides a few stuck vehicles, nothing else of note has occurred on the streets of the city as of yet. The parking ban issued by the department for Thursday remains in effect.

East Providence Public Works Director Steve Coutu said things are going about as anticipated considering the amount of snow. He said, “We’ll be here for a while,” when discussing the time he anticipates crews will need to clear the some 12 inches expected to cover the city by storm’s end.
