East Providence Police arrested a 25-year-old male in an alleged stabbing incident Friday, Feb. 16, in city.

According to the report published by EPPD Public Information Officer Captain Michael Rapoza officers responded to a Riverside residence after the department received a pair of emergency calls regarding an assault with a knife.

One call came from the location of the incident on Crescent Avenue.  The second came from the parking lot of the Cumberland Farms store at the corner of Pawtucket Avenue and Wampanoag Trail.

Officers located the male victim of the stabbing in the Cumberland Farms parking lot. The man had sustained numerous stab wounds and was bleeding profusely. Officers, joined shortly by the East Providence firefighters, began treating the victim for his injuries. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he currently remains in serious, but stable condition.

All the while Friday night, the investigation continued at the location of the incident.  It was determined the suspect, later identified as North Providence resident Valdini Correia, entered the Crescent Avenue residence without permission and immediately began stabbing the male victim without provocation. Correia then fled the area.

It was eventually determined the incident stemmed from a domestic situation involving an ex-girlfriend.

Approximately one hour later, Correia was arrested by the North Providence Police Department without incident. East Providence Police then took custody of him.

Correia has been charged with the following:

  • Domestic Burglary
  • Assault With Intent to Commit a Felony
  • Assault With a Deadly Weapon in a Dwelling
  • Weapons Other Than Firearms Prohibited
  • Domestic Disorderly Conduct

Correia was arraigned by a bail commissioner at the East Providence Police Department Friday and was held without bail.
