EAST PROVIDENCE — Over 3,000 city residents were without power Monday morning, Oct. 30, as severe wind gusts overnight blew over trees and snapped power lines.

According to the National Grid website (https://www.nationalgridus.com/RI-Business/Storms-Outages/Outage-Map) a significant portion of Riverside, some 2,900 customers, was without power as of 9 a.m. That outage stretched from Forbes Street south to Bullocks Point Avenue and “The Terrace” neighborhood.

A bit east, from Wampanoag Trail to the Grassy Plains neighborhood, another 600-plus were without power. And farther north, in Rumford, over 800 customers were without power stretching from Rogers Williams Avenue to the city line with Pawtucket at Newport Avenue.

According to the National Weather Service, gusts in East Providence registered a high of 58 miles per hour just before 1 a.m. Consistent gusts actually ranged between 39 mph-43 mph from midnight to 3 a.m. Even into the morning, near 8 a.m., a gust of 45 mph was recorded in city. The winds and rain were associated with Tropical Storm Philippe, which traveled northeast after striking landfall in Florida late last week.

Of note as well, East Providence schools were cancelled for the day, adding another element to what has been a wild week for the district. Start of classes was delayed two hours on October 25 after a thief stole batteries from some 30 buses overnight at the Ocean State Transportation lot on Commercial Way in city.
