PORTSMOUTH — Two men were arrested Saturday following two accidents and two chases — one in a vehicle, another by foot.
At about 4:36 p.m. on Halloween, Portsmouth Police were investigating a motor vehicle accident on East Main Road near Village Way when a passenger in one of the vehicles, later identified as Jeremiah Berube, exited the car and ran from the area, according to police.
The driver of the same vehicle, later identified as Elliot Britto, then sped away at a high rate of speed, police said. An officer pursued the vehicle for about a mile until Mr. Britto’s car collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Boyd’s Lane and the on-ramp to Route 24 northbound, according to police.
Mr. Britto, who was combative with officers as he was being detained, had a strong aroma of alcohol on his breath, police said. It was later determined that the vehicle he was driving had been stolen out of Providence, according to police.
Mr. Britto was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, driving while intoxicated, eluding a police officer, failure to stop after an accident with an attended vehicle, driving with a suspended license and simple assault. He was also wanted on a warrant for failure to appear in court, police said.
Mr. Berube was later located near the scene of the first accident and taken into custody. He was charged with obstruction of an officer.
The operator of the second vehicle struck by Mr. Britto was transported by the Portsmouth Fire Department to St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River with what appeared to be minor injuries, police said.
