Parents pleased as bus stops are moved off Wampanoag Trail

School officials decide to put stops back on the side streets

Barrington school officials recently moved a few bus stops that had been located along the Wampanoag Trail onto some side streets.

For years, students had waited at bus stops on Pine Top Road, Kyle Street and Peck Lane. But at the start of school this year, parents discovered that the stops had been moved off those side roads and instead placed on the Wampanoag Trail, a busy two-lane roadway.

Parents called and sent emails to school officials, and attended a school committee meeting in early September to alert committee members to the issue.

"I have a very hard time letting our child stand on the Trail," Kyle Street resident Jamie Jennings told committee members during the meeting. "It doesn't matter what time of day — in the morning or at night. It's a completely unsafe place for any child to stand."

The committee discussed the issue during that meeting, and a short time later, school officials ordered that the bus stops be moved back onto the side roads.

Officials had said that it was difficult for the larger school buses to navigate the smaller side roads, so they ordered that bus route to be serviced by smaller buses.

Residents whose children use the bus stops in that area of town were pleased with the district's decision to move the stops onto the side roads.

"We are thankful the board and superintendent listened and took our concerns seriously," wrote one resident.
