Paul Aime Giroux, 94, Tiverton

Paul Aime Giroux, 94, (June 19, 1923 - October 11, 2017) of Tiverton, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on October 11, 2017. Born in Fall River, Paul graduated from Msgr. Prevost High School in 1940.

Drafted into the U.S. Army while attending Northeastern University in Boston, during World War II, Paul served in the Army Civil Affairs Division which re-established civilian government in Europe during the war. Paul participated in five major campaigns in Europe.

Following the war, he remained in the Army Reserves and was commissioned an officer in Military Intelligence. Recalled in 1951, he served in the Counter-Intelligence Corps in Frankfurt, Germany. Paul attended courses at the Grenoble University in France.

Paul married Jeannine M. Ledoux of Fall River in July 1943, while attending the U.S. Army ASTP program at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. After 67 years of marriage, Jeannine passed away in 2010. Paul was re-married to his loving wife, Margarete, the former Margarete Tripp, in 2011.

In 1945, Paul established the real estate firm of Giroux & Company, Fall River. During his career, Paul served as president of Giroux Associates, Inc.; chairman of the Giroux-Audet-Rua Insurance Agency; president of the Fall River Board of Realtors; vice president and trustee of the Mass. Board of Real Estate Appraisers; president of the New England Chapter of the American Society of Real Estate Appraisers and Life Member of the Society; president of the New England Chapter of the Appraisal Institute and Life Member of the Appraisal Institute; chairman of St. Anne’s Hospital Board of Directors; vice president of the Quequechan Club; president of the Greater Fall River Development Corporation; and was appointed a Realtor Emeritus in the National Association of Realtors.

In addition, Paul’s specialized appraisal practice brought experience in eminent domain, littoral, water and riparian rights, ad valorem taxation, and nursing home appraisals. As an expert witness, he practiced in the U.S. Federal District Court, Boston; the U.S. Tax Court; U.S. Bankruptcy Court; Superior Courts in nearly all counties in the Commonwealth of Mass.; the Mass. Appellate Tax Board; and superior courts in Rhode Island and New Hampshire. Court decisions based on his testimony were made in the Supreme Judicial Courts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. His passions included sailing, reading history, traveling and driving his Cadillacs and Jaguars. He participated in several philanthropic activities and enjoyed visiting with his extended family, many of whom reside in Europe. He was fluent in both French and German.

Besides his wife, Paul leaves two sons, Bernard P. Giroux and his companion, Margaret A. Sweet of South Dartmouth Mass., and Claude A. Giroux of Taunton, Mass. There are seven grandchildren, Cena Thibodeau of Maine, Aimee Brainard and her husband, James, of Florida, Camille McCranie and her husband, David, of Norwood, Mass., Emilie Giroux and Philip Giroux of Manchester, NH, Andrew Giroux and his wife, Lenore, of Tewksbury, Mass., and Nicole Giroux of Taunton. There are seven great-grandchildren: Morgan and McKenna Thibodeau of Maine; Halei and Lily Brainard of Florida; Rhiley Giroux of Taunton; and Alastair and Eloise McCranie of Norwood, Mass.
