The Mt. Hope High School gymnastics team won the Rhode Island Division II championship, and senior Victoria Gendreau placed second in the individual all-around competition at the RIIL

State Gymnastics Meet at Rhode Island College on Sunday night. “I’m really proud of the team this year. My heart was pounding, I was so proud when we won,” said Victoria Gendreau.

The title was the first in six years for the Huskies, who went undefeated with a record of 10-0. “The girls were amazing on Sunday. They worked so hard all season, especially the last two weeks. The girls really stepped up, adding higher level skills to improve their scores,” said head coach Nicole Daniello.

The Lady Huskies scored 139.68 as a team and finished second to Division I Champions North Kingstown who scored a meet high 141.05. The team’s strongest event was floor where they placed second (Victoria Gendreau), third (Kaitlin Quinn) and fourth (Jayme Foreman).

Senior Victoria Gendreau scored nines in all four events, scoring a 9.150 on vault, 9.050 on bars, 9.0 on beam, 9.3 on floor and a 36.500 all around, which placed her second in the state behind North Kingstown’s Shileigh Martinez who scored a 37.55 all around. “Victoria is a very strong competitor. She has been consistent all season on all four events,” said coach Daniello.

The freshman trio of Meghan Oliver, Kaitlin Quinn and Jayme Foreman shined for Mt. Hope. Oliver placed fourth in the state in

all around with a score of 35.350 and second in beam with a score of 9.35. Oliver may have finished stronger, but flew off the mat while attempting a tumbling pass during her floor routine. “Meghan is a fierce competitor. Despite a hard fall (on floor), she got up and finished her routine strong,” said coach Daniello.

Quinn placed 10th in the state in all around with a score of 34.000 and placed third in beam with a 9.10 and on floor with a 9.20. “Katie worked extremely hard (in preparing for the state meet) adding new skills, a lay out fly away for bars, new tumbling passes and jump series for floor and a new flight series for beam,” said coach Daniello.

Foreman placed 15th in all around with a 33.425 and fourth on floor with a 9.15. “Jayme’s score in all around was her season high. She also improved her floor routine with higher level jumps and performed a one and a half back salto for her first tumbling pass,” said coach Daniello.

Senior Jordan Masaitis performed well, scoring an 8.150 on vault, a 7.70 on bars and an 8.0 on beam, despite missing most of the

season due to an illness. “Jordan was determined to compete at her last state meet of her high school career and support her teammates. She had a strong performance and contributed to the highest bar total for the Huskies all season,” said coach Daniello.

Notes: Senior Kelsey Gonzalez scored a 7.850 on vault. Ashley Heald improved her score on bars by changing her high bar routine and adding a lay out fly away for a score of 7.30. Brianna Gendreau scored a season high 7.150 on beam. The Huskies outscored Division I Lasalle and South Kingstown. All six competitors on beam stuck their routines. “I am so proud of our team. They have continuously impressed me all season long by their effort and motivation. You can not ask for more as a gymnastics coach,” said coach Daniello.

Head coach Nicole Daniello’s team was comprised of three seniors, Jordan Masaitis, Kelsey Gonzalez and Victoria Gendreau; junior Skylar Kallman; sophomores Ashley Heald and Brianna Gendreau; and freshmen Jayme Foreman, Kaitlin Quinn, Meghan Oliver, Emilie Donato, Katie Donato and Kaira Lawrence.
