Police: Angry illegal camper escorted out of Barrington

Overnight camping prohibited in Veterans Park

Posted

A routine overnight check of Veterans Park in Barrington turned into a police escort out of town on Friday, Sept. 29.

It started at about 3 a.m. when a Barrington Police officer drove down the dirt roadway at Veterans Park during a routine check and discovered a camper parked near the back lot with a pickup truck parked nearby.

The officer knocked on the camper’s door and a man inside began yelling and cursing at the officers. The man allegedly told officers he did not want to exit the camper and talk to them.

Officers warned that if the man did not exit the camper, it would be towed out of the park. Police said overnight camping at Veterans Park is not allowed — the park is closed from sunset to sunrise.

The man, still yelling and cursing, exited the camper and was instructed to hitch up the camper and tow it out of the park.

He obliged, eventually, and police followed the truck and camper as it left Veterans Park. Police followed it as it traveled north on Route 114, but then pulled into the RIPTA park and ride lot near the White Church.

Police pulled into the lot, ordered the man to turn down his radio as it was quite loud, and told him he could not stay in the park and ride lot.

The man then pulled out of the lot, driving south toward the center of Barrington. Police followed him — he eventually pulled into a bank and then a short time later headed out of town on Route 114 North. Police last spotted the man driving into Seekonk.
