A Barrington resident called police on Thursday night, Feb. 14, after his 6-year-old daughter was bitten on the leg by a wild animal.

The resident told police officers that he believed a raccoon bit his daughter, but officers said they smelled a strong odor of skunk when they arrived at the scene.

The resident said he was just heading out for a walk with his son and daughter from their home near Barrington Town Beach at about 8 p.m. when the animal darted at his daughter and bit her left leg. The girl suffered a small puncture wound on her leg. 

EMTs at the scene offered to take the girl to the hospital, but the resident said he would drive her instead.

Police notified officials from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management about the incident.
