EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence Police Department announced in a statement released just before noon time on Monday, Dec. 11, officers were actively investigating reports about threats of potential violence being made at East Providence High School.

Of most importance, the statement, penned by the department's Public Information Officer Captain Michael Rapoza, noted, "Currently, there is no credible information to believe there is an actual threat. The safety of the students and staff is of utmost importance, and we will provide further information if it becomes available."

Rapoza wrote investigators were looking into "graffiti and vandalism at the high school that referenced a threat of violence."

Rapoza's statement continued, the EPPD planed to have an increased presence of school resource officers and patrol officers throughout the day and during dismissal around 2 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, East Providence High School Principal Bill Black authored an alert distributed to the community about the situation.

Black's statement (pictured above) read as follows:

"We're writing to inform you that we have received information regarding a potential threat posted on Snapchat regarding a school shooting at East Providence High School tomorrow, December 12, 2023. Additionally, there's been graffiti within the school.

"EPSD (East Providence School Department) and EPPD are actively investigating, and we are taking necessary precautions to ensure all students and staff are safe. We'll keep you informed as we gather more information. Your child's safety is our top priority.

"Report any concerns to the school administration or local authorities.

"Thank you for your understanding."
