Police: Portsmouth corn maze vandal found

Parents contacted police about damage

PORTSMOUTH — Police say they know who’s responsible for vandalizing the Escobar's Highland Farm Corn Maize earlier this month — and they had some help from the juvenile’s parents.

Sometime in the early morning hours of Oct. 13, someone damaged stalks of corn inside the Middle Road maze, knocked over six of seven port-o-johns and flipped over several picnic tables. Left behind was a men’s, size 9 Nike sneaker — with a vodka nip bottle inside.

On Friday, Oct. 19, detectives “received information from concerned parents that one of their children may have been responsible for the vandalism,” Detective Lt. Michael Arnold stated in a press release Tuesday.

“Detectives interviewed the juvenile, who took responsibility for the vandalism at the maze,” he said. “The juvenile will face court sanctions along with any restitution for the damage. This investigation is ongoing and detectives are currently following up on several leads, which may result in additional arrests.”

Lt. Arnold said police were grateful to the public for the numerous tips they received, which generated a majority of the leads in the case.

“The department also wishes to commend the parents involved for bringing the juvenile forward and accepting responsibility for this incident,” he said.
