Barrington man out $500, no date to show for it
A Barrington resident contacted police after he fell prey to an apparent online dating scam last week.
The resident told officers that he had joined a dating website recently and tried to coordinate a date with a woman who was on the site. But before that could happen, he was told he needed to purchase a "dating card" for $250.
The resident obliged and purchased the dating card. He was then instructed by the site to purchase a second "dating card" for another $250.
He did what he was told, anticipating the upcoming date, but was then informed that the female party he was hoping to meet would not be doing so.
That's when the local man called police and reported the alleged online scam. It was not clear whether the man would be able to recoup the money.
The incident was reported to police on Sunday, June 12.
