Barrington police responded to Spinnaker Drive at about 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, for a report of youths being loud on a nearby stretch of beach.
The police officers parked on Spinnaker Drive and made their way to the beach, where they encountered a group of 11 teenagers huddled around a small bonfire. Some of the teenagers had allegedly been at a private school prom that evening.
Officers spotted a number of empty beer cans littered on the ground, but the teenagers said there had been fires at that location in the past. An officer then spotted a brown backpack on the ground — it contained six full cans of alcoholic beverages. Britton C. Defeo, 18, of Rehoboth, Mass., allegedly told police the backpack was his. Police then charged Mr. Defeo with underage possession or consumption.
One of the teenager's parents was home during the bonfire, but the man told police he did not know anyone had alcohol there.
