PORTSMOUTH — The Patriots held off North Kingstown Thursday night to advance in the boys’ state open basketball championship, as sophomore Chris Herren collected his 1,000th career point.
Portsmouth now advances to the Elite 8, facing No. 2-seeded Bishop Hendricken at 2 p.m. Sunday at Brown University.
Herren connected with a 3-pointer early in the first half to get his 1,000th point and finished with 29 points. Much of his scoring was done from the free-throw line, where he went 14 for 18.
The rest of the team was strong from the foul line as well, going 23 of 28 in the second half, including six from senior Jack Kelly, who finished with 11 points.
The game turned into a nail-biter near the end. The Patriots led by 10 with just over three minutes to play but the Skippers didn’t give up, making it a 61-58 game with just 11 seconds left. A couple of free throws by senior Darnell Taylor at the end sealed it for Portsmouth.
Besides Herren and Kelly, other scorers for Portsmouth were Matt Clark (9, including two 3-pointers), Taylor (5), Zach Rahilly (4), Sean Coyne (3) and James Reilly (2).
