Portsmouth boys fall to Westerly in varsity basketball, 77-53
PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys’ varsity basketball team couldn’t overcome an outstanding first-half offensive onslaught by the visiting Westerly Bulldogs and lost its second straight game to begin the season, 77-53.
Westerly dominated the first half, going into the break with a comfortable 44-17 lead. The Patriots outscored the Bulldogs in the second half, 36-33, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the gap.
Four Westerly players scored in double digits against Portsmouth, with the Bulldogs’ Jawarie Hamelin leading all scorers with 17.
Jack Skrzypiec and Ben Hurd led the Patriots’ offense with 13 points apiece.
Also contributing were Justin Parsons (8 points), Parker Mason (6), Ben Gesmondi (5), Andrew Preuit (4), and Tim Chlaupek and Owen Gugliatta (2 apiece).
The loss dropped the Patriots record to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Next up
The Patriots will host Dartmouth at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18.
After that, the team travels to Moses Brown for a 6:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, Dec. 19, before hosting Shea High School at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21.
