PORTSMOUTH — After dropping the first game of a holiday basketball tournament in Tiverton, the Portsmouth High School varsity boys’ basketball team rebounded to take the final two matchups.
On Wednesday, the Division II Patriots wrapped up the tourney, which featured all non-league games, with a decisive 67-40 win against Mount St. Charles.
The Barrington Booster/Viti Auto Holiday Tournament, held at Tiverton High School Monday through Wednesday, also featured contests with Tiverton, Barrington, Mt. Hope, Mount St. Charles, Shea, Holy Name, Middletown and Snowden high schools.
On Wednesday, the Patriots took a large early lead against the Mounties and at one point led by as many as 25 points. Matt Clark was the top scorer for Portsmouth with 18 points, followed by Darnell Taylor with 13.
Portsmouth’s leading scorer, sophomore Chris Herren, sat the game out due to shoulder issues.
On Tuesday, the Patriots defeated Holy Name, 68-60.
Clark was the high scorer in this contest as well, with 25. Herren added 19, and Zack Rahilly and Sean Coyne also had strong offensive performances.
On Monday night against Division 1 North Kingstown, Portsmouth was down by only two points with about five minutes left, but the Skippers pulled away for a 65-54 victory.
Herren dropped in 18 points for the Patriots, and Taylor added 15.
The Patriots will host Westerly High on Tuesday, Jan. 5, before traveling to Newport to take on Rogers on Thursday, Jan. 7. Both games starts at 7 p.m.
