Portsmouth girls take 2nd in cross-country Class B Championship

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School girls’ cross-country team took second place in the Class B division at the Class Championships at Ponaganset High School Saturday. The overall winner in the division was Bay View.

The Patriots’ freshman Elizabeth Sullivan took fourth place on the 3-1-mile “Covered Bridge” course with a time of 19:42.

Other finishers for Portsmouth were Sofia White, who took sixth with a time of 20:35; Haley Scardina, who came in 16th at 21:51; Rebekah Lawson, who placed 18th in 22 minutes flat; and Mary Powell, who came in 21st with a time of 22:22.

The girls’ team qualified for the State Cross-Country Championships starting at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8.

The PHS boys’ team placed eighth overall in Class B on Saturday.

Sophomore Ezra Leary was the top runner for Portsmouth, finishing in 29th with a time of 18:16.

Ethan Shea followed him in 30th place with a time of 18:19 and Mike Chisolm came in 37th with a time of 18:40. Also competing for Portsmouth were Noah Grammit (39th place, 18:49) and Vincent Gardner (44th place, 19:05).
