Landon Rodrigues shines in 55-meter hurdles

PORTSMOUTH — Several members of the Portsmouth High School boys’ indoor track team competed Saturday at the highly competitive Yale High School Classic, a track invitational held each January.

One of the Patriots, Landon Rodrigues, had a particularly impressive day. Competing against about 50 boys, he took sixth place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.88 seconds.

“Landon had a fantastic meet,” said coach Evan Denard. “His semifinal time was the third time that he had hit 8.00 in the event and he’s been itching to break the 8-second barrier. He was ecstatic once he heard his time from finals. That time hits the automatic qualifying standard for the New Balance Indoor National Championship meet.

Two other members of the team, Sean Gray and Chris Vachon, competed in the 3,000-meter run, in which nearly 200 boys participated in multiple heats. Gray came in 17th place in a time of 9:03, while Vachon came in 92nd with a time of 9:42.

“Sean had a great race,” said Denard. “We weren’t too sure how he would do, as he was really sick this past week. He hadn’t had the chance to really race the 3,000 since Dec. 27. Right from the beginning, he looked strong and was competitive. Considering how sick he was, finishing two seconds off his (personal best) is amazing.”

Team is 7-0

The boys also competed in a dual meet on Monday — beating Narragansett, 93-22, and Prout School, 93-22 — to improve to 7-0 for the season.

The Patriots won 10 of 13 events and set 18 personal records to boot.
