Portsmouth holds off Barrington in boys soccer

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School varsity boys’ soccer team headed into halftime with a seemingly comfortable 3-0 lead over Barrington Wednesday night, but had to fight until the end to prevent an Eagles’ comeback win.

Despite being shut out offensively in the second half, the Patriots held on for the 3-2 victory in the game, the Division I opener for both squads. 

Portsmouth scored its first goal four minutes in, when Ken Armijo took Chris Stack’s long throw-in and headed it into the goal. 

Eight minutes later, Matt Marion snuck a ball into the left post. Shortly before halftime, Connor Richardson booted a rebound into the next to make it 3-0.

Barrington got on the board six minutes into the second half, when Harrison Brown put one in the net. Just a few minutes before the final whistle sounded, the Eagles’ Louis Bachetti scored to pull Barrington to within one.

• Thursday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m.: South Kingstown High School, at Curtis Corner Middle School

• Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m.: Shea High School at home

• Thursday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m.: at Chariho High School

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
