Portsmouth plays to a tie, but still gain in soccer standings
Liam Callahan scores twice for Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH — They didn’t beat La Salle Academy Monday night, but the Portsmouth High School varsity boys’ soccer year still managed to gain in the Division I standings.
The Patriots and the unbeaten Rams played to a 2-2 tie on the Portsmouth turf field.
PHS junior Liam Callahan scored both goals for the Patriots, the first just seconds before the first half ended. The second tied the game up with under four minutes left.
With the tie, Portsmouth’s record is now 5-2-5, and the team earned a point in the standings to possibly improve its seeding in the state playoffs. (The Patriots lost in the state championship game last year to Barrington, 2-1.)
La Salle, meanwhile, remains unbeaten at 8-0-4.
The Patriots are scheduled to play Classical at home on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m.
The team will finish the regular season with a makeup game on the road against East Providence at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27.
