PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth Police are investigating the theft of an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle that was reported stolen from a North Drive residence, Detective Lt. Michael C. Arnold said in a press release sent out Wednesday.

The theft may have occurred within the last two months, but wasn't reported stolen until Tuesday, March 6, he said.

The rifle contains the word "Sasha,” which is engraved on the wood foregrip, he said.

The rifle was described as a Kalashnikov model 47 with a bluing upper and lower receiver, woodfore grip and black plastic pistol grip, Lt. Arnold said. The rifle also has a side-folded metal rear butt stock. Also stolen were nine empty magazines for the firearm.

Anyone with information about the theft are asked to contact the Portsmouth Police Detective Division at 401/683-0994 or the general line at 401/683-0300.
