PORTSMOUTH — Tiverton held off the Portsmouth Little League softball 11-12 Majors All-Stars' attempt at winning the District 2 title Tuesday night, taking a 13-3 victory in a game shortened by the mercy rule.
Coming into the game undefeated, Portsmouth still has another chance at the title. Portsmouth and Tiverton will play again for all the marbles tonight (July 6) at 5:45 p.m. at the Town Farm Sports Complex on Main Road, Tiverton.
At stake is the District 2 title and a trip for the winners to the state tournament.
Playing at Glen Park Tuesday, Portsmouth started off promising, holding off a Tiverton charge which loaded the bases in the top of the first. Portsmouth got out of the inning without giving up a run.
Portsmouth answered back offensively in the bottom of the inning. Katie Spaner led off the inning with a triple and came in to score on Brooke Whitmarsh's groundout.
Emily Colicci worked a walk, and Kendall Ferris then blasted an inside-the-park, two-run home run.
That's all Portsmouth would get for the night, however.
Tiverton answered back with a barrage of scoring opportunities on only three hits. Portsmouth never was able to find much success offensively or defensively throughout the game.
