PORTSMOUTH — The 2019 transfer station vehicle stickers go on sale on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.

On Nov. 26, the Town Council voted to raise the vehicle sticker fee to $180 for 2019 — a nearly 30-percent jump over the current fee of $140. The cost of one additional vehicle sticker per household is $10.

The sharp rate hike is necessary because it will be more expensive to operate the station next year. In addition, the town overestimated the number of residents who would be using the transfer station this year, which means less available revenue to pay for operations.

Stickers will be available for sale at the Tax Collector’s Office at Portsmouth Town Hall during normal business hours: Monday through Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The town allows sticker-holders a one-month grace period to obtain a new sticker. Last year’s transfer station sticker will provide entry into the facility until the end of January 2019.

The town will continue its pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) program used in conjunction with the transfer station. All residential household waste must be disposed of in specially marked town-approved bags residents purchase at area stores. Recycling is disposed of free of charge.

Yard waste drop-off is available from March 15 to Dec. 31 and is free of charge for sticker-holders. Yard waste must be in paper bags or transported in containers not greater than 64 gallons when brought to the transfer station. Trailers are not allowed in the transfer station.

Annual transfer station sticker-holders receive four construction and demolition debris (C&D) and/or asphalt, brick and concrete (ABC) passes provided by the Tax Collector’s Office on an as-needed basis. A C&D or ABC pass is good for one load of C&D or ABC, respectively, to be disposed of in separate bins.

Each load must be in containers and volume may not exceed 32 gallons. Each additional load up to and including 32 gallons of C&D or ABC may be disposed of in the respective bin for a $50 fee per load by purchasing additional pass(es).

Full details on the program and a list of FAQs can be found here.

Stickers may be obtained through the mail using the form available on the town’s website and at Town Hall. Mail applications may be mailed or deposited in the tax payment drop box at Town Hall.

Residents are asked to enclose all appropriate documents, including a stamped, self-addressed envelope if obtaining a sticker by mail. The town is not responsible for lost mail applications.

Call the Tax Collector’s Office with sticker questions at 401/683-1214. Questions on the PAYT program should be directed to Recycling Coordinator Ray Antaya at 401/643-0359 or rantaya@portsmouthri.com.
