Riverside ups recent win streak, in pole position to earn first place in regular season standings

EAST PROVIDENCE — The Riverside Post 10, ATC-sponsored Junior Division squad returned to action over the last week, adding a pair of victories and avenging its lone loss to date in the 2023 Rhode Island American Legion Baseball League season.

Post 10 had won five games in a row since falling to R&R three weeks ago by a 6-4 count.

The locals improved to 11-1 in the RIALBL standings following a pair of wins over R&R Construction Post 7 of Newport, a 6-1 victory over Post 39 South Kingstown, an 18-0 thumping of Warwick/West Warwick Post 2 and a 2-0 win over North Providence Post 29.

As the final week of the regular season approached, Riverside was on pace to finish in first place in the league standings and to earn the No. 1 overall seed in the upcoming playoffs, which was likely to be accompanied with a bye in the first round.

Riverside headed back out on the road for a game in West Warwick against Post 2 on July 12, returning with a resounding 18-0 victory in five inning due to the Mercy Rule. Marley was the beneficiary on the mound, striking out six and allowing just two hits while tossing just 42 pitches total in five frames.

Post 10 plated a pair of runs in the top of the first, including one on a RBI-double by Haggerty to take the quick lead. The local blew the game wide open by scoring 10 times in the top of the second. Riverside did so by drawing eight walks. Andrews and Renaud each had run-scoring doubles in the onslaught. Vaughan and Hellene drove in runs with singles.

Post 10 was the guest once again when it traveled to North Providence Post 29 Monday night, July 17.

Starting pitcher Vaughan allowed just one hit in six innings of work. Haggerty tossed a clean seventh to earn the save.

Hits by Lynch, Andrews and Martins accounted for the Riverside runs.

Post 10 was slated to finish its regular season with a two-game set against Gershkoff-Elmwood Post 20 this week, including Wednesday evening, July 19, at Cranston Stadium at 6, and at Pierce Thursday night, July 20, at 5:30 p.m.
