A trio of former professional ball players who learned their craft right here in Bristol will be honored as the next generation of baseball greats hit the field next week.

Bristol’s King Philip Little League has scheduled annual opening day ceremonies for Saturday, April 29, at Veterans’ Memorial Park, beginning at 10 a.m.

This year, the league is honoring three men who played for KPLL and went on to play professional baseball — Raymond Cordeiro, Stephen Annarummo and Manny DaSilva.

“These are great accomplishments and certainly worthy of praise and recognition,” league officials said in a release. “Together, we have made Little League in Bristol stronger and better. We hope you are able to attend and join the KPLL family in celebrating a new baseball season.”

For baseball parents, team pictures are scheduled to be taken on the same day. Check www.bristolkpll.org for times.

Raymond Cordeiro played 15 seasons of professional ball from 1957-1972, on teams affiliated with the Kansas City Athletics, Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates. A career minor-leaguer, Mr. Cordeiro pitched at the AAA level for two seasons, compiling a 7-9 recordd with a 4.50 ERA, according to baseball reference.com. He spent the bulk of his career in AA, pitching to a 59-51 record with a 3.29 ERA.

Manny DaSilva played baseball for KPLL from 1982-1985. He was a member of the 1984 KPLL All Stars who won the RI State Championship. He went on to play baseball at Bristol High School and was a three-time All State baseball player and one-time All State football player. He attended UNC-Chapel on a baseball scholarship and was All ACC and All American his junior year as a catcher. He is the only player in UNC history to homer in his first and last college at bat. He was drafted by the Oakland A's after his junior season and played 3 years in their organization, getting into a couple of AAA games. He is the hitting and catchers coach at Roger Williams University.

Steve Annarumo played for KPLL in 1968. He graduated from Bristol High School in 1974, played outfield and was All State. He went to Florida State University for a short time, then returned to play at RIC. He was drafted in the fifth round of the January 1977 draft by the Boston Red Sox. He played Single A ball at Winter Haven in the Florida State league and roomed with Wade Boggs during his first spring training. He played with other notable Red Sox players such as Bruce Hurst, Gary Allenson, Rich Gedman, Mike Smithson and Glenn Hoffman. While he never made it to the Major Leagues, he played two years professionally.
