PRUDENCE ISLAND — The board of the Prudence Island Water District will hold elections on Saturday, June 15.

The district board consists of a moderator, a clerk and three additional board members. All are elected to staggered four-year terms and elections take place every two years.

The current terms of the moderator and one board member expire in June. The election to fill these positions is non-partisan and any qualified elector (voter) is entitled to seek nomination to run for either moderator or board member.

Anyone who falls into at least one of the following categories is a qualified elector and may run for district board member or moderator:

• any person who is a registered voter at an address within the water district;

• any person who is a deeded property owner within the district; or,

• any person who is a customer of the water district

To run for moderator or board member in the June 15 election, a candidate must:

• request nomination papers by calling 401/683-0011, e-mailing info@pih2o.org, or downloading nomination papers at pih2o.org.

• collect at least five signatures from qualified electors and submit them to Christopher Brown at the Prudence Island Water District Clerk no later than 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.

Once nomination papers are submitted to the district clerk, the Board of Canvassers will verify the signatures. All candidates meeting the required minimum of five qualified elector signatures will be listed on the ballot.

Voting will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 15 at the Hope Brown Center, 0113 Mt. Pleasant Avenue on Prudence Island. Per Rhode Island law, voters are required to show a photo ID to obtain a ballot and vote. Qualified electors unable to vote in person on election day may request a mail ballot.

The Prudence Island Water District Board of Canvassers must have a signature and proof of identification on file to process mail ballot applications. Registration forms for mail ballot eligibility may be requested by calling or e-mailing the water district.
