Questions: What should the town do with the Carmelite Monastery property? Please be specific ...

Kate Berard (D) — “To review what, if any, portion the town should retain: we have consensus on the importance of natural buffers/green space; determine the maximum number of units on remaining parcel; provide for age restriction, if any, and affordability percentage, then refer for staff drafting and get it back to market.”

Ray Clark (R) — “I opposed the town purchasing the property. That said, I support the development of a limited number of ‘townhouses.’ The council should not have promised to keep the monastery entirely intact. However, they used that promise to secure the vote. I support preserving some of the structure including the chapel.”

Braxton Medlin (D) — “The Watson Ad-Hoc Committee has done a fantastic job creating plans that will best serve the town now and in the future. Having seen the plans, I believe that affordable housing for our seniors that preserves as much green space as possible would be excellent. Move my grandma to Barrington!”

Jarrod Ryan (R) — “The town council should’ve consulted the C.O.A prior to the acquisition of the monastery. To preserve our process, I would honor the 2021 and 2022 Financial Town Meeting citizen’s vote in good faith. To preserve the monastery for senior living. No demolition. Hopefully, we can add a senior veteran preference.”
