Rate decrease coming for Barrington’s community electricity program

Lower prices will be locked in for six months

Electricity supply prices will decrease dramatically this summer for people enrolled in the Barrington Community Electricity program.

According to a press release from the program consultant Good Energy, prices will drop from the winter rate of 17.6 cents per kilowatt hour to 10.2 cents. The new lower prices will be locked in for six months, from May to November.

“Current participants do not need to take any action to remain in the program and receive the new pricing for the product in which they are currently enrolled,” stated the press release.

“May 2024 will also mark the one-year anniversary of the Barrington Community Electricity program. The Town is pleased to have delivered on the program’s goals of offering residents and businesses cleaner electricity, at affordable prices.”

According to the press release, most participants in Barrington’s program use “Barrington Standard” which provides more renewable energy than Rhode Island Energy’s Last Resort Service. Barrington Standard will also still provide cost savings this summer, stated the release.

“The additional renewable energy is sourced entirely from local Rhode Island projects, including the Narragansett Bay Commission wind turbines at Fields Point in Providence, solar in West Greenwich and additional wind turbines in Coventry,” stated the release.

Barrington is one of seven towns in the community energy aggregation program. The other towns are Central Falls, Narragansett, Newport, Portsmouth, Providence, and South Kingstown.

In the first 10 months of the program, participants purchased more than 2,200 megawatt-hours of voluntary renewable energy, equivalent to displacing more than 1.66 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.

“The vast majority of the Town’s residential and commercial electricity users enrolled in the program, and collectively participants saved more than $644,000 from May 2023 through February 2024, while supporting new, renewable energy facilities here in Rhode Island,” stated the release.
