Record crowd turns out for Barrington school's adventure race

Hampden Meadows School Tough Tiger draws nearly 1,000 people

Posted

The Hampden Meadows School Tough Tiger adventure race enjoyed its biggest turnout ever on Sunday afternoon, despite cool temperatures and cloudy skies.

Nearly 1,000 people participated in the elementary school's fund-raiser. The big draw was likely the huge mud pit that waited for runners at the end of the adventure race.

This year's Tough Tiger offered participants a shorter run, but more obstacles. The race started on Kent Street near the front of the school and featured a tire-run obstacle. The runners followed a short course through side streets to the field behind Sowams School.

Once runners reach Sowams they had to complete a tire flip, a tire drag, a tunnel to crawl through and a standing broad jump. There were also haybale hurldles, wooden wall obstacles to crawl over or under, noodle hurdles and a large haybale mountain.

The race course followed the Hampden Meadows Greenbelt path to the woods behind Hampden Meadows School. There were rope mazes, slack lines, a 15-foot cargo net obstacle, a tarp tunnel and other challenges.

Finally runners crawled through a 30-foot section of mud to reach the finish line.

Hampden Meadows School fourth-grader Hayden Knight grabbed bragging rights after he finished with the top time of the day — the 10-year-old finished with a time of 12:39.

The top adult finisher was Steve DeBoth, who finished with a time of 14:16. (Steve's son Iain is a fourth-grader at Hampden Meadows and finished just a few steps behind his dad.)

As had become a tradition, Hampden Meadows School Principal Tracey McGee participated in the Tough Tiger. She wore a tiger headband and skirt.
