Reich: Term limits and the school committee

Posted

According to the National Conference of State Legislators, 15 states currently have term limits in place for legislators, including Colorado, California and Florida. This year, Florida voters will decide whether those limits extend to school committees.

Research is mixed, however evidence suggests that term limits encourage committee member independence and lead to greater community involvement.

Limits also encourage transparency and stifle corruption that seems to be built on old relationships and favors.

Term limits yield fresh faces with novel thoughts. If elected, I intend to bring passion, dedication and creativity before shifting my efforts to support the next group of motivated parents, educators and passionate residents to take my place. These limits don’t have to be law; voters in Bristol have the opportunity on Nov. 6 to facilitate change by electing thoughtful, concerned and hardworking people with new ideas to shape our children’s education, culture and environment.

Carly Reich

Ms. Reich is a candidate for Bristol Warren school committee.
