Reich: The grittier the better for our students

Posted

Test scores alone aren’t the only yardstick of success. A less tangible, but no less meaningful metric is Grit.

Angela Duckworth, a leading research psychologist, defines grit as having passion and perseverance towards a long-term goal. Practices that help develop grit include public speaking and student-led conferences where students present their work. KMS has been doing this for the past two years. Grittier kids are also more likely to graduate.

Instilling a growth mindset in our children is yet another tool for cultivating self worth, curiosity and removing the fear of failure. Growth mindset is simply the belief that children can succeed despite all obstacles. This has proven a valuable learning technique as well for children with special learning needs. Many of our educators have already embraced this practice.

By continuing to bolster these intangibles in our classrooms we will be providing our children with a more holistic education.
